Social error correction and how to use it

Computer systems talk to each other over networks that are prone to failure and data loss, so computers have built-in error correction algorithms that sense when the data that the computer is receiving might be incomplete. Humans are wise to do the same. We have multiple peer verification systems like peer review. This operates also on the individual level. We reserve judgment until we can get a “second opinion” or a third.

It is important to remember that communication is inherently incomplete. As computers get more and more able to fool the viewer, we should increase our emphasis on skepticism and error correction. The whole “Russia-gate” thing was really an exercise in error detection and error correction. There are massive networks of bots out there spamming on social media. But there are also massive networks of real people, screaming for justice.

When we transitioned from the migratory band of hominids to the multi-million person city, we lost the ability to trust in many ways. When one is surrounded by only one’s known friends, one does not have to negotiate every transaction. You know that your friends will protect you when you are weak. You don’t have to file paperwork to defend it.

But now we enter into the age of mass-everything. You don’t know your DMV worker. They don’t know you. So you rely on codified and universal rules to communicate with them. I don’t think we have yet really found a new equilibrium for this new type of relationship.

This new relationship of the one and the abstract other is new. We are still trying to figure out how to move from the village to the cosmopolitan existence. The ancient Greek philosopher Diogenes was the first to use the term cosmopolitan. He meant it in the literal sense: a citizen of the cosmos. So this idea is not new.

Hopefully, as we transition further into the Aquarian idea of the individual in a sea of other individuals, we can reach a broad consensus on what universalities we need to be a stable society. I don’t know what those are, but I think they are coming.

masks

the masks we wear, they wear us out

from when I was a straightish man
to yes, a “sportsman,” I once deigned
and then the mask at once became
a gayish, 19 years of age
sweet Jupiter was wooed I’m sure
the cleverest boy, with boyfriends too
to married father, divorced rage
and this transgender thing they say
I’ve always been quicksilver
darting Mercury through the haze
and so a traveler wearing masks
becomes the masks he at once gazed

and then the deepness tackled out
to bring the truth with Hades’ clout
I’m won because I’m just so sure
Masks are all and nothing more

Fear and Loathing in Outer Space!-An Astrological Essay for our Crazy Times

Hey folks, if you’re feeling a lot of fear and dread right now, at least astrologically, there is an explanation. There is an event that hasn’t happened in the sky for almost 4,000 years. Pluto, Saturn, and Jupiter are all in the same part of the sky, in the sign of Capricorn. Pluto is the planet of death and rebirth. Saturn is the planet of fear and karma. Jupiter is joyous and lucky but it also IS AN AMPLIFIER AND MAKES EVERYTHING BIGGER!

So you have two seriously dour and gloomy planets, Saturn and Pluto, in Capricorn the sign of rules, patriarchy, tradition, and hard work. Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008, right when the financial meltdown happened and it’s been upending traditional power structures ever since. Pluto exposes the dark side of a sign, and anyone with a brain can see the dark side of traditional power structures since 2008. Saturn loves Capricorn, and it’s trying to clean up some of the messes caused by Pluto. They will conjunct only one time, next Saturday the 11th in the US. The last time they touched was in 1982, when there was a serious recession and the religious right was just getting started in the US.

Jupiter just got into Capricorn and won’t join the party with Saturn and Pluto until later this year. But they will all be very close to one another all year. Depending on your own personal chart these planets (yes, I know Pluto is a dwarf planet, but we just use the word planet for every major body in astrology) will affect your life in probably dramatic ways. For me, they are passing through my 3rd house, the house of communication, vehicles, siblings, and roommates. My car broke down and I created a mess with my roommates this last month that I’ve had to repair. Depending on what challenges you are facing right now, do it the right way and accept hard reality and you’ll be ok.

Jupiter will come along and probably soften some of the harshness later in the year, but then Mars comes into the party! This is really just insanity. All of the crazy shit going on in the US and other countries right now is all predicted by the astrology. We’ve been watching this unfold like “yep, there’s all the dudes in power acting shitty. There’s the crazy anxiety and panic.” And I know it’s really heavy right now. Like I said, this hasn’t happened for 4,000 years and when it did last the city of Babylon was founded in modern day Iraq, pretty much starting civilisation as we know it.

Don’t despair! It’s definitely a serious time, and IT WON’T LAST FOREVER! It’s ok. It’s going to pass. And after these planets pass through Capricorn, they move into Aquarius, the sign of egalitarianism, fraternity, technology, and progressive ideas. This is a really good time to build foundations for the future. I know it’s en vogue to say “We’re all gonna die soon; nothing matters!” But life is quite variable and can change very quickly. We’ll make it through together. This year definitely is going to be a shit show, but do you know what is ALWAYS a shit show? Radical change. And it’s coming. The dinosaurs ain’t gonna win. If only under 40 voters voted in the US, Bernie Sanders would already be president. The young people know that what we have is broken. And there’s a weird thing about old people that are resistant to change, they tend to die.

Next Friday is a lunar eclipse on the day before Saturn and Pluto conjunct, and it is exactly opposite Saturn, Pluto, the Sun, and Mercury! It’s insanity. And the moon is in its favorite sign Cancer! The technical way to describe it is: shit is going to be bonkers!

Astrology is definitely not an exact science. It’s more like poetry, but to me it works, and sometimes it REALLY works. Stay strong. Be serious. Work hard. And forgive yourself if you’re struggling. We all are.

As a last point, the United States was founded when Pluto was in pretty much the same spot. It takes almost 250 years to go around the sun! And what did the United States along with the co-occuring French Revolution represent at the time? A radical overthrow of old systems of power, i.e. Monarchy. This is a big time to be alive. It’s gonna be rough, but it can be a great time to grow. Stay grounded my loves. Think like a goat, the animal that represents Capricorn, and just keep climbing that mountain one step at a time.

Mercury Retrograde

Mercury retrograde is really just about auditing your thinking. Some part of your mind looks backward for 6 weeks at what it has wrought. Your brain is in an “updating” phase, downloading updates for itself, doing maintenance. So we are all a little distracted. We share some non-local, subconscious collective process that moves like fish in a school. It’s the wave world, not the particle world. And that part of us that moves with that herd, is backward-looking. Then when Mercury retrograde ends, like today, we can go forward fully facing the future, with a new version of your mental operating system.

The Simple Concept of Transpersonal Awareness

I was listening to a 1975 lecture by astrologer Dane Rudhyar today on Youtube, and he referenced his previously written book entitled “The Sun is also a Star,” and it’s rather obscure, but on the drive home I saw that the local movie theatre is playing a movie named “The Sun is also a Star.” Synchronicity…

In the lecture, he was talking about what “transpersonal” or “cosmic” consciousness is, and what I can surmise from it is the following:

  1. We are born into our physical bodies from the controlled world of the womb into the completely uncontrolled world of birth.
  2. We breathe our first breath and breathe in the shared breath of millions of beings before us who breathed in that same very air.
  3. We are at once, both ourselves, supporting our bodies, and wholly dependent on the other.
  4. For the first part of our lives, we are focused on the body and its contents.
  5. Then, through trauma and chaos, we are broken apart and realize our dependence on something higher.
  6. As we move from ego structured thinking to transpersonally structured thinking (taking into account forms other than merely our bodies), we must chose between focus on us and focus on the larger more whole reality.
  7. And so we must “trust in God” insofar as we have to trust that by looking at a more whole picture of the universe and devoting less attention to our basic needs, we will still survive.
  8. Our attention becomes split between the body and its needs and the larger self, called total consciousness or total awareness.
  9. We learn to balance the form of our body and the formless of the larger totality

I see from this that we do not lose our attention on our body and our ego. We just see them in the context of the larger totality. So, anyone that thinks that they must devote all of their time to God or the All will necessarily run into trouble unless they are dependent on others who are more focused on the mundane realities of everyday reality, like going to work and getting food. The true spiritual act is to balance the body and the ego within the context of the whole of our experience. Being spiritual does not mean rejecting the body; it means incorporating the body and ego into the larger entirety that is called God or Brahman or Allah by seers in the past.

The astrological concept of Saturn, the lord of reality and time, is the mediating factor between the sphere of the personal self and the larger sphere of the transpersonal self. I had my “come to Saturn” moment on January 17th, 2016 when I realized I couldn’t just run to the other, the higher by killing the body. I had to accept my body as part of the whole. And I suppose that “the Sun is also a star” can mean that individual people are suns within the cosmos of the stars. We are the microcosm and the macrocosm.

Any questions are warmly welcomed. Peace discordiaños.

Poem from the fire

What yonder fire laundered me and freed me from captivity?
Oh Pluto’s burn
was all I yearned
before I knew it
she was me
I changed into a mermaid, see?
These gills can fill my lungs
with peace
I’ll swim with Chiron
and his dream
a cross bent back
will straighten up
The fire’s in my sacred cup
called love
my heart bleeds glee and joy
I’m with you till I go and
die

What Mercury retrograde means for you

According to astrological lore, when a planet goes retrograde, it slips into its shadow side. Mercury is going retrograde right now, and for the next few weeks it will be going “backwards” in the sky. Retrograde motion is really just an illusion. No planets go backwards. But there does seem to be something there in regards to astrology.

So for the next few weeks try and operate from your heart-centered place. Know that your needs and wants might be screaming at a higher volume. I’ve already made a few mistakes this retrograde and said things that were immature. The purpose of retrograde motion is to challenge us to do better and slough off patterns that no longer serve us.

Imagine that you are sailing a boat down a river. When a planet goes retrograde it’s as if the water level drops on the river, and thus, the rocks on the bed of the river are more exposed. You no longer have the ease of sailing on a high level of water, so you have to pay better attention for a while. This sharpens your ability to communicate.

You can always do nothing and let your boat scrape on the metaphorical rocks and be far worse off. Those rocks might show up as assuming a me versus them mentality and saying things from a defensive standpoint instead of a confident, heart-centered position.

Be well my friends. I know not everyone believes in astrology, but these suggestions work if you don’t believe as well. And lastly Mars is retrograde too in Aquarius using the tropical system. There’s a lot of challenge going on. No one is perfect. We all make mistakes and get bumps and bruises. The important part is that we get up and get back on the wheel of that boat sailing down the river of life.

Prayer to Eris, dark queen of chaos, wanderer of the Kuiper Belt

Oh in the name of dwarf-planet Eris, icy queen of the Plutonic Kuiper Realms, I inhale the vapors of the Libran full moon, I call on my transgender powers to end all of Western Civilization just by being, I drink from the goblet of Saint Hoffman, and I exhale…

So now that Christ is dead until Sunday and all. Since he’s indisposed, I thought I’d share without worry of shame because sometimes I really overthink my perspective, and I just need to get it out. I should probably just give a report on my life since Facebook is beseeching me to share!

It’s definitely a ride in the ol’ Yellow Submarine machine. I thank my lucky Neptune that I’m still alive, and I somehow happen to have a beautiful girlfriend too!

I’m working full time, and in school full time to become a mental health worker, so all super serioso stuff. I live in Portland, Oregon, a city that is absolutely without peer in its total inability to handle the Trump presidency without internalizing the official “the sky is falling!”, “you’re a pathetic serf,” “no gods will love you,” premise, which is the whole fucking point of the Trump “we really, really don’t like black presidents!” golden apple shitpost of a presidency. I mean, I know it’s like the perfect bait for the holy roller Luke Skywalker staring into the desert class. I get it. But, this shit is too much. Laugh people! Laugh at your captors! Gleefully squirm in their shackles.

Oh, and I work for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, and you know how pissed we are at everything. I’m shaking my finger at you world! My facebook post is now being edited by grammarly for appropriateness now. Goddess forbid that I mispel a word!

And right now, I’m just barfing up digital confetti because that’s the appropriate reaction to the Paleo friendly Zuckerberg stew that we’re all pigging down on. But don’t worry! Silicon Valley is disrupting our way to salvation!

But lastly, please don’t let any of this profane anti-social speech condemn my future and my children’s future to a life of bleak toil on the lunar spice mines. I need to get a license and all. Thank God I can use this phony creation called Abbey Pope, Discordo-shaman to the interweebs and total alter ego and definitely not the other girl on my resume that shall remain nameless.

Praise the giant dwarf planet asteroid dancing in the sky who conjuncted my moon as a babe. I know you will always be with me because you know, you can’t spell Aries without

oh well, you get it…

Please return to your veneration rituals to the solar zombie god.

A deluge of data and flood of fake news is coming. Exercise your critical thinking muscles to survive it.

A hugely important if not most important skill is critical thinking. Now that our machines have become masters of illusion, only those who exercise their critical ability will not be sung to the rocks by the fake news sirens. In this new digital jungle, an appropriate detachment is maybe the only thing that can save you. I’m definitely not innocent of being fooled in my life, trust me, but I think we know that our technology is rapidly becoming very deceptive, and those who have not worked out their discretionary muscles will be the first to be sucked down the drain of Neptunian confusion.

Even those “scientists” who have memorized books and books of dictums will be easily swallowed up. Memorization is not logic. One can exercise the scientific method, an invaluable tool, and not be a “scientist” as is properly understood by the masses. You can be properly scientific about your own internal mechanisms and emotions, something very difficult to test and therefore largely ignored by the scientific establishment. You can be properly scientific and detached about mysticism, synchronicity, magick, and many other verboten subjects.

In Astrology, we are entering the “Aquarian Age” for reasons I won’t explain here. The interesting thing about the sign of Aquarius is that it is represented by a young androgynous boy pouring water out of a jar. Also the name Aquarius means water quite obviously. But the sign is actually an air sign, as all astrological signs have a corresponding classical element (fire, water, air, earth). The element of air symbolizes the intellect, data, communication, and change. Might we be witnessing the deluge of data? The flood of communication?

What will be the ark on which one will rise above this coming wave? I would say that it would be individual discernment and critical thinking with a heavy dose of listening to one’s own heart as well.

Ode to the blood moon

Oh entrancing she in silver light
shines down
what dreams we see are orchestrated
by her stoic, pallid face

and in ten hours hence
a fence will rise
the earth’s girth blocks
her lover’s light
the sun

and so in trembling rage
she’ll pick a different hue
a bloody menstruation
to her face the earth will glue

Diana, Luna, Phoebe
and the million other names that I don’t know
give blessing to the ones tonight
who feast upon your crimson show

we sing, we dance, we chant
we bow to you exalted queen
please lend this solo scribe
a scrap of your immense esteem

I am the sun

I am the sun
that got stuck behind the moon
But moons can be moved
with just enough grace
and fire

Driving home from work
watching a YouTube video
on my dash
That’s how the goddess spoke to me

I met a girl four months ago
right after the solar eclipse
She said she doesn’t have any fire in her chart
But I think I stole some anyway

And now there goes the moon
The light is peeking through
I’m all I have
A fiery one who needs no gun
I am the sun
